Winchester, Kentucky commemorated Veterans Day with a series of ceremonies across its schools, honoring those who have served in the military. These events took place due to the holiday falling on November 11, which was a Monday in 2024, providing an opportunity for local students to pay their respects.
Baker Intermediate, Strode Station Elementary, and Robert D. Campbell Junior High were among the schools that held ceremonies prior to the official holiday. Baker Intermediate held its event on Monday, November 11, featuring a series of performances and remembrances dedicated to veterans.
Principal Josh Mounts expressed gratitude towards veterans, emphasizing the significance of honoring their sacrifices. “This is a solemn reminder of the sacrifices of our veterans who have dedicated their lives to protect the freedoms that we hold dear,” Mounts said during the ceremony.
The event included performances by the school’s chorus, where students sang the anthems of each military branch, followed by a touching tribute song titled “Grateful Nation.” The Winchester Fire Department’s Honor Guard also participated in the Presentation of Colors.
At Robert D. Campbell Junior High School, the ceremony featured a variety of student-led activities, including a “21 Thank You Salute” and a reading of an essay by student Charlee Frick. The event culminated in a performance titled “Freedom Finale” by the junior high band.
Among the honored guests was Jason Ashburn, a former member of the U.S. Navy, who delivered a stirring speech reflecting on the discipline he gained from his military service. He was later awarded the Coy H. New Distinguished Veterans Award, named after the grandfather of Principal Mounts. Ashburn led students in a salute, reinforcing the importance of recognizing veterans.
Assistant Principal Renee Ware concluded the Baker Intermediate ceremony with a poignant reminder: “The best way we can honor our veterans is to remember the sacrifices they made and to be grateful every day as we go forward.”
By participating in these ceremonies, students in Winchester actively engaged in the country’s tradition of honoring veterans, ensuring the memories and contributions of these courageous individuals are not forgotten.
