Each student can redeem $10 vouchers for up to 10 evening rides per semester, significantly reducing their transportation costs. The revamped program has seen a 97% growth in ridership, fulfilling over 400 trips weekly, while streamlining operations for UK Transportation Managers. This initiative reflects the university’s commitment to enhancing student mobility and ensuring safe rides home.
In the bustling city of Lexington, a game-changing partnership is making transportation for students at the University of Kentucky smoother and more accessible than ever. The Wildcab program, initially a student-run service, has now been revamped through an exciting collaboration with Uber Transit. This transformation is ready to sweep over the hearts—and rides—of more than 30,000 students living in and around the University.
Let’s take a little stroll down memory lane. Wildcab started out as a weekend-friendly safe ride service, operating between 10 PM and 3 AM from Thursday to Saturday. It was all about making sure students got home safely after a night out. However, managing this in-house led to some headaches around driver recruitment and less than stellar wait times for rides.
Enter the partnership with Uber. By tapping into the tech giant’s platform, Wildcab transformed into a full-scale, on-demand transportation service that spans a sprawling 284 square miles across Fayette County. Now, students can easily request and track their rides directly through the ever-familiar Uber app. Smooth, right?
In a leap forward that has delighted students, Wildcab has now become known as the “Wildcab Vouchers” program. This innovative approach took off in 2023, allowing students to enjoy subsidized rides using Uber’s Vouchers product. This shift means that UK Transportation Services can set specific subsidy amounts and operating hours, and they can distribute easy-to-use vouchers via email, links, or QR codes.
Each student can redeem $10 vouchers for up to 10 evening rides per semester. This fantastic arrangement helps bring the average co-pay down to just $2.50 per ride. It’s an excellent way for college students to save a little extra cash while enjoying a safe ride home!
Since launching the Vouchers program, there has been a staggering 97% growth in monthly ridership. In fact, the program is now fulfilling over 400 trips each week, which marks an impressive 83% increase compared to previous semesters. The benefits extend beyond just numbers; the service area has grown, now covering all of Fayette County, which is especially handy for commuter students and those living off-campus.
During Spring 2024, reports indicated that Wildcab trips almost quadrupled from the previous semester, hitting a remarkable 8,180 rides in Fall 2024 alone—representing an additional 29% increase in ridership! Themes of convenience and efficiency resonate throughout this program.
Not only has Wildcab expanded its reach, but it has also successfully addressed challenges related to staffing and managing overtime hours for the UK Transportation Managers. The shift to the Vouchers system has streamlined operations significantly. Now, managers can easily track spending, generate useful reports, and monitor ridership through the Uber for Business Dashboard.
With the Wildcab Vouchers program, students have greater control over their transportation choices. Whether heading out for late-night study sessions or weekend fun, the flexibility and ease of access to rides offer a wonderful sense of independence. This partnership truly reflects the University of Kentucky’s commitment to continually adapt and enhance the transportation needs of its dynamic student body.
So, here’s to a new era of student transportation in Lexington! With Wildcab Vouchers now in full swing, students can look forward to getting from one place to another more easily—and that’s something worth celebrating!
