In partnership with Uber Transit, this initiative allows over 30,000 students to access subsidized rides via the Uber app, improving safety and convenience. The enhanced Wildcab service has significantly increased ridership, allowing for easy navigation of campus and surrounding areas, as well as expanding service areas to include over 280 square miles. With vouchers available for up to 10 rides each semester, students are set to enjoy a seamless transportation experience.
In the heart of Kentucky’s vibrant city of Lexington, students at the University of Kentucky are in for a treat with the exciting expansion of the Wildcab Vouchers program. Launched in partnership with Uber Transit, this initiative aims to enhance student transportation, making it easier and safer for over 30,000 students to navigate the bustling campus and its surrounding areas.
Back in 2022, the UK Transportation Services breathed new life into the Wildcab program, transforming it from a student-operated safe-ride service into a robust microtransit program. This revamp allows students to request rides via the Uber app, making late-night transportation as easy as a few taps on their phones. Gone are the days when students had to rely on limited hours and student-funded services that operated only from 10 PM to 3 AM on weekends.
Originally, the Wildcab service faced some hurdles, including struggles with student driver recruitment, longer wait times, and stagnating ridership. However, the relaunch has addressed these challenges effectively. Now, students can not only request rides more seamlessly but also track them in real-time, thanks to dedicated Wildcab vehicles on duty.
Fast forward to 2023, and the program has taken another leap forward with the introduction of the Wildcab Vouchers program. This innovative feature allows students to utilize *subsidized rides* through Uber’s Vouchers product, offering customizable on-demand transportation. Students can easily redeem vouchers in the Uber app, all while transportation managers track spending and ridership using the user-friendly Uber for Business Dashboard.
The partnership with Uber not only streamlined operations but also resulted in a noticeable drop in the operational burdens and staffing issues transportation managers faced. As a result, the Wildcab service has seen a fantastic increase in student ridership—an incredible 97% rise in monthly riders since the launch of the Vouchers program. Now, over 400 weekly trips are being fulfilled, showcasing just how much students appreciate this upgraded service!
The Wildcab service area has also expanded by over 280 square miles, which now includes all of Fayette County. This makes it much more accommodating for commuter students and those living off-campus. Each eligible student can receive $10 vouchers for up to 10 rides during the semester, available from Thursday through Sunday, between 9 PM and 5 AM. This flexibility is a game-changer for students juggling classes, work, and social lives.
The remarkable success of the program exemplifies the University of Kentucky’s commitment to providing transportation solutions that meet the needs and preferences of its students. Thanks to the collaboration with Uber Transit, students can look forward to safer, more convenient options that enhance their overall college experience.
So, Lexington students, get ready to take advantage of this fantastic service that not only keeps you safe but also makes getting around town a breeze!
