Lexington Health Department Reports 67th Case of Pertussis Amid Ongoing Outbreak

LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department reported a new case of pertussis, also known as whooping cough, confirming its identification last week. This latest case marks the 67th instance of the disease since an outbreak began in April of this year.

Health officials continue to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing the importance of public awareness regarding the symptoms of whooping cough. Pertussis is highly contagious and can pose serious health risks, particularly to infants and vulnerable populations.

Symptoms of whooping cough typically include severe coughing fits, which can be accompanied by a “whooping” sound when inhaling. Other symptoms may include runny nose, nasal congestion, and mild fever. As these symptoms can resemble those of a common cold or flu, it is critical for individuals to seek medical attention if they suspect they have contracted the illness.

The health department urges residents to consider their vaccination options. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent the spread of pertussis. The DTaP vaccine is recommended for children, while adolescents and adults are advised to receive the Tdap booster.

Officials are also encouraging community members to stay informed and be vigilant, especially as the colder months approach, when respiratory illnesses tend to increase. Individuals who are experiencing symptoms are advised to avoid contact with others until they can receive a proper diagnosis.

As the outbreak situation evolves, health officials will continue to provide updates and resources for the public to stay safe and informed. Vaccination clinics and informational sessions may be scheduled in the coming weeks to further assist the community in preventing the spread of whooping cough.

In conclusion, staying informed about pertussis and adhering to recommended vaccination schedules can help curb the ongoing outbreak in Lexington.
