Lexington, Ky. — To help locals maintain their health and overcome gym intimidation, the Whitaker Family YMCA has introduced an innovative fitness solution called EGYM. With an impressive 80% of community members identifying as “health seekers,” many individuals express a desire to be fit but lack the necessary knowledge to achieve their goals.
The initiative was introduced by Dana Ensley, who emphasized the need for a fresh approach. “We had to think differently, outside the box,” Ensley remarked. EGYM serves as a high-tech alternative to traditional weightlifting, merging fitness with technology to engage members and track their progress.
Upon starting a workout, users scan their bodies with the EGYM machine. This scan collects vital health metrics which are subsequently uploaded to personal accounts. “It’s all technology based,” Ensley explained, showcasing how data is integrated into the YMCA’s systems for ease of tracking.
First-time user Marcy Kloiber expressed her excitement about the new system. With the convenience of a wristband, Kloiber no longer needs to manually record her exercise routine or adjust her machine settings. “I just swiped my little armband, and it adjusted it where it needed to be,” she stated. “It already had the weights.”
The EGYM machines also provide entertainment to keep users engaged. As individuals lift weights, they have opportunities to play games displayed on a touchscreen, such as collecting coins during their workout. This gamification turns the exercise experience into a challenge rather than a routine task. “Every time you miss the coin, it is very frustrating,” Kloiber remarked, highlighting the competitive aspect of the technology.
By implementing EGYM, the YMCA aims to transform “health seekers” into regular gym-goers. Ensley noted the importance of stimulating motivation through measurable results and engaging workouts. “The fulfilling part again is just somebody getting that initial kind of buzz,” she concluded, underscoring the ultimate goal of fostering a more personalized fitness experience.
As EGYM continues to gain traction, the Whitaker Family YMCA believes it will become a vital resource in helping the community meet their health goals effectively and enjoyably.
