Lexington – A tragic incident occurred on Friday evening when 67-year-old Mary Downs was struck and killed by a vehicle that crashed into an apartment complex in the Tates Creek area of Lexington. The collision took place at approximately 5 p.m. in the 3700 block of Camelot Drive.

Downs, who sustained multiple blunt force injuries, was pronounced dead shortly after 7 p.m. at the scene. In addition to her, another person was taken to the University of Kentucky Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The police arrived shortly after the crash and discovered the vehicle lodged halfway inside the building.

The Lexington Fire Department subsequently assessed the scene and cleared the apartment complex for occupancy following the incident. The collision reconstruction unit of the Lexington police is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. However, authorities have indicated that no criminal charges are expected to be filed against the driver.

Mary Downs was visiting family at the time of the accident. According to her daughter, Chaconna Downs, her mother was a woman deeply rooted in faith, integrity, and love, known affectionately as “Momma Mary” by her colleagues at the Hilton. Chaconna emphasized her mother’s commitment to treating everyone like family, highlighting her presence in the lives of many younger workers whom she often supported with rides and encouragement. Mary was noted for her positive influence on those around her, always urging her children and others to pursue their dreams with unwavering support.

Chaconna revealed that she was acquainted with the driver involved in the accident and believes the tragic incident was not intentional. In coping with her mother’s sudden death, she is relying on her faith along with the core values and lessons on love and community that Mary instilled in her family.

The close bond between Chaconna and her mother was evident as she recalled their shared experiences, which included traveling, cooking together, and sharing laughter. Despite having moved to Florida, their relationship remained strong, reflecting Mary’s dedication to family and their deep connections.

The Fayette County Coroner, Gary Ginn, has classified the crash as an accident. The investigation is ongoing as the authorities work to piece together the details surrounding the incident. Community members are mourning the loss of Mary Downs, and tributes to her kindness and character have begun to surface in the aftermath of this heartbreaking event.
