Valley View Ferry Closes for Repairs, Expected to Resume Operations in 1-2 Months

Lexington, Kentucky – The Valley View Ferry, a historic transportation service across the Kentucky River, will cease operations today, November 30, at 8 p.m. This closure is expected to last from one to two months as the ferry undergoes necessary repairs and recertification.

The ferry, which has been in continuous operation since its inception in 1785, provides free vehicle transport for residents between Fayette, Jessamine, and Madison counties along Kentucky 169. The impending shutdown is primarily due to the ferry’s Certificate of Inspection expiring, a requirement mandated by the United States Coast Guard (USCG).

According to the Valley View Ferry Authority, the dry dock period is essential for efforts to ensure the safety of passengers and crew. During this time, the ferry barge will be removed from the river for an extensive inspection required every five years by the USCG. In addition to the inspection, ferry captains and crew will perform routine maintenance and address any issues identified by USCG inspectors.

The estimated duration for the ferry’s closure is one to two months. However, officials have cautioned that delays could occur due to adverse weather conditions or unforeseen repairs. The ferry’s management prioritizes the safety and operational compliance to maintain public trust and service efficiency.

Travelers needing alternative routes during the ferry outage can take US-27 South from Nicholasville to Lancaster in Garrard County, followed by KY-52 East to Richmond. For those making the trip between Lexington and Richmond, I-75 serves as an appropriate detour.

Financed by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and the fiscal courts of Madison and Jessamine counties, along with support from the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government, the Valley View Ferry is managed by an authority comprised of local residents and officials from the three counties served.

The Valley View Ferry has long been a vital infrastructure component for the communities in its service area, and this temporary closure aims to ensure its continued safe operation for future generations.
