University of Kentucky Launches Wildcab Program with Uber to Enhance Student Transportation and Safety

Student ride-sharing service

Lexington, Ky. — The University of Kentucky has partnered with Uber to launch Wildcab, a late-night, on-demand transportation service aimed at enhancing student safety and accessibility in Fayette County. This program caters to over 3,000 students seeking convenient and affordable transportation options on Thursday through Sunday nights, operating from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Under this initiative, each student receives 10 vouchers worth $10 that can be applied to Uber rides anywhere within Fayette County during the specified hours. “I live off campus, and that’s really helpful for me because I don’t have to worry about, like, getting to campus and then getting back to my apartment,” said Jordyn Estridge, a student taking advantage of this service.

The Wildcab program simplifies the process for users. Students can order an Uber just like a regular ride through the app, and the vouchers are automatically applied from their digital wallet. “You don’t have to do anything. It just pulls up and shows you how many trips you have left,” explained Estridge. Any student with a valid UK email can enroll in the program.

According to James Hutchins, the UK associate director of transportation services, the initiative was developed to promote student safety. “It gives them a way to make responsible decisions in order to get back where they need to or get to where they’re going,” he stated. Hutchins also highlighted that the program provides a more convenient solution by reducing the need for the university to maintain its own fleet of vehicles or hire student drivers.

Estridge noted the financial benefits, especially considering the fluctuating costs associated with typical Uber rides. “No one’s going to complain about $10 off,” she remarked about the service’s affordability.

As the fall semester progresses, students are reminded that their vouchers will expire at the end of the semester but can be renewed each term. In anticipation of upcoming events, UK Transportation Services is collaborating with Uber and Keeneland to offer transportation vouchers for students attending Keeneland’s “College Day” on October 18.
