University of Kentucky Appoints Laura Stephenson as New Dean of Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment

The University of Kentucky has appointed Laura Stephenson as the new dean of the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment, the university announced last week. She will also serve as the vice president for land-grant engagement, overseeing the university’s responsibilities in teaching, research, and service related to agriculture.

Stephenson’s role will involve collaboration with UK’s Cooperative Extension programs across all 120 counties in Kentucky. “I am incredibly excited to assume these important leadership positions on behalf of UK and the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment,” she stated. She emphasized the importance of continuing the legacy established by her predecessor, Nancy Cox, who announced her retirement after over a decade in the role.

UK President Eli Capilouto expressed confidence in Stephenson’s capabilities, stating, “Dean Stephenson knows Kentucky. She knows Kentucky agriculture and she is firmly committed to our land-grant mission.” He highlighted the importance of her leadership and understanding of the state as essential to advancing UK’s mission.

Laura Stephenson returns to UK after serving for six years at the University of Tennessee in similar capacities. Prior to her time at UT, she had worked for over 20 years within UK’s Cooperative Extension Service.

Provost Robert DiPaola praised Stephenson, noting her extensive reputation in the agriculture community both within the state and nationwide. “She will build and expand upon the strong foundation that Dean and Vice President Cox established,” he stated regarding the future direction of the college.

The announcement marks a significant transition for the Martin-Gatton College, with Stephenson poised to further its impact in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and beyond.
