University of Kentucky Hosts Big Blue Bee Spelling Competition for Central Kentucky Students in 2025

Lexington, Kentucky – The University of Kentucky College of Education, in collaboration with the Scripps National Spelling Bee, is offering students in Central Kentucky an exciting opportunity to compete for a place in the prestigious 2025 national competition. This initiative pertains particularly to Perry County, which is included in the Scripps National Spelling Bee’s Central Kentucky region.

On March 29, 2025, the Big Blue Bee will take place at the UK Gatton Student Center. Schools from 39 Central Kentucky counties, encompassing private, cooperative, and home schools, are invited to send their top spellers in grades one through eight to participate. This event serves as a regional qualifier, giving young talent a platform to shine in the world of competitive spelling.

The winning participant from the Big Blue Bee will receive sponsorship for their trip to Washington, D.C. to compete for the coveted Scripps Cup. “The Scripps National Spelling Bee is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, so there is a lot of buzz about this year’s bee,” remarked Mariama Lockington, research administrative coordinator for the College of Education. “We look forward to sending our regional winner to this historic event.”

To take part in the Big Blue Bee, schools must register through the Scripps educator portal and conduct their own school spelling bee by January 31, 2025. Currently, the enrollment fee is $185 per school, but it will increase to $199 after October 31. With the national competition gaining significant attention, this is an opportune time for schools to engage their students in spelling challenges.
