LEXINGTON, KY – With tax deadlines rapidly approaching, the local United Way of the Bluegrass is stepping in to offer assistance. The organization is providing free tax services to qualified residents in the area.
The United Way of the Bluegrass recently hosted a ‘Super Saturday’ event offering free tax preparation help. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program orchestrates such events for underserved communities each tax season. Despite the conclusion of the ‘Super Saturday’ event, further help remains available to those needing tax preparation assistance.
“It’s just like getting your taxes done anywhere else, except it’s free,” stated Gary Cremeans, Director of Community Impact at the United Way of the Bluegrass.
Every tax season, the United Way’s VITA program aims to give back millions of dollars to local taxpayers by offering free preparation services. Tax preparation can be an expensive service that many low-income individuals and families can’t afford. Therefore, the VITA program plays a crucial role in ensuring that these demographics are not left unsupported during tax season.
“It’s not inexpensive to have your taxes done, so for folks who maybe need those extra dollars, it’s a great opportunity for them to build a nest egg or to be able to improve their own financial future by being able to keep all of their return,” added Cremeans.
Cremeans strongly emphasized the importance of citizens having access to free, safe tax help. He has noticed that some businesses can take advantage of unassuming individuals by offering payday loans instead of proper tax preparation.
“A lot of other businesses out there take advantage of folks, and it’s more of a payday loan than really a tax preparation. So, the IRS really wants folks to not get caught up in that,” warned Cremeans.
For those who may feel nervous or hesitant about the tax preparation process, reassurance comes in the form of volunteers trained and certified by the IRS. These volunteers, in conjunction with United Way staff, provide guidance throughout the tax process.
“Our United Way staff is here to guide them through the process, and I think that’s more than anything, there’s a little bit of hesitancy coming in, but once they meet with us and they meet with our volunteers who are amazing, they feel very comfortable and very relieved when they leave that they’ve got it all taken care of,” said Cremeans.
Residents unable to attend the recent ‘Super Saturday’ event can now dial 211 to schedule a free tax appointment. The VITA tax services are open to anyone who earned less than $62,000 in 2023. Remember, early booking is paramount for timely tax return filing and avoiding last-minute rush.
