Lexington is home to Sqecial Media, an alternative gift store that provides a unique shopping experience for its customers. Owned by Mary Morgan, the store is located at 371 S Limestone and offers a wide variety of merchandise, including books, mugs, incense, ritual candles, and spiritual statues. Morgan emphasizes that her mission goes beyond merely selling items; she aims to create a welcoming environment where shoppers can explore and discover something new.
Starting December 14, Sqecial Media will have special holiday hours: Sundays from noon to 6 p.m.; Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and on Christmas Eve, the store will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. As the holiday season approaches, Morgan anticipates steady business but does not expect a significant increase in sales compared to previous years. She believes that recent events, like the November 5 election, have sparked a desire in younger shoppers to find joy and comfort, making her store a suitable destination.
Sqecial Media began as a used bookstore in 1972 and has since evolved into what Morgan describes as a “mystical general store.” The shop features a diverse array of items from various religions and cultures, keeping in line with the vision of inclusivity set forth by Morgan’s late partner, David Adams. Morgan notes that there is no set formula for their inventory, simply a focus on items they personally enjoy, which often resonates with customers as well.
Despite the changing retail landscape, Sqecial Media remains committed to traditional marketing techniques, relying primarily on word of mouth and community engagement rather than expensive advertising. To celebrate its anniversary every March, the store donates to five different charities, reinforcing its connection to the community.
In terms of holiday shopping, Sqecial Media excels in providing unique stocking stuffers that are uncommon in mainstream retail settings. Morgan highlights that visitors often leave with items that are both charming and unexpected. The store maintains a friendly atmosphere, still encouraging mask-wearing post-pandemic, while prominently displaying pride flags and offering LGBTQ+ merchandise since the 1970s. Morgan expresses that every customer feels ownership of the store, enhancing their shopping experience.
With the holiday season upon us, Sqecial Media stands out not only for its eclectic selection but also for its community-focused philosophy and inclusive environment, making it a vital part of the Lexington landscape.
