Courtney Chafin, Chair of the UK Staff Senate at the University of Kentucky, recently revealed a newly adopted shared governance structure. This change is designed to ensure that the over 26,000 staff members spread across the state and beyond have a direct influence in the university’s decisions. With this new structure, staff members can review and provide critical feedback on the institution’s budget before it takes effect.
“Staff members are now being able to provide critical feedback on issues and opportunities that impact us the most and that we are responsible for implementing,” Chafin commented. The new structure stipulates that the Staff Senate will consult on key issues like career progression, compensation, benefits, and human resources policies.
Staff members play a vital part in the academic success of students at the University of Kentucky. With a deep involvement in the academic health system, administrator and staff have significant responsibilities concerning executing policies and regulations, caring for the university’s people and places, spearheading innovative work, and more. “They must have a voice and vote in those decisions,” said Chafin, emphasising the importance of staff contribution.
While this new governance structure has led to strong opposition among many faculty members who worry about potential changes to the decision-making process regarding academics, Chafin assures that teachers will continue to have control over the content and structure of their courses.
The adoption of a shared governance structure sets a precedent for higher education institutions to acknowledge and address the integral roles their staff members play in executing university operations. This move amplifies the voice and decision-making power of staff, marking a significant change in the dynamics of university administration.
Although it has met with considerable opposition from the faculty due to concerns over academic decision-making, the shared governance structure remains an essential change for the University of Kentucky. It shows recognition of the vital contribution of non-academic staff in the overall functioning of the university and increases their involvement in key decision-making processes. The university community now watches as this new structure unfolds, with anticipation for the changes it will bring to both faculty and staff.
