Creating an Euphoria with Music
The University of Kentucky might have gone into summer mode with its graduation ceremonies complete and the majority of the student population having dispersed, but the lively aura delighted and echoed through the campus. This is attributed to non-stop rehearsals for the annual UK Opera Theatre’s celebration of song, “It’s a Grand Night for Singing.” The high energy show took five weeks from the commencement of rehearsals to the opening night.
Amalgamation of Genres
With a mission to provide exposure to a variety of genres, “It’s a Grand Night for Singing” is more than just opera. From show tunes, movie-associated songs to multi-genre radio hits, the repertoire is indeed diverse. This year’s event even featured a 2013 Grammy-nominated hit “Roar” by Katy Perry that was later transformed into a stage musical “& Juliet”.
Everett McCorvey, the UK Opera Theatre director, believes there’s much more to the performing arts and built this event to provide the students with broad level experience. The purpose of the event is to make students realize the array of performance opportunities beyond the traditional opera.
A Community Undertaking
Besides providing platform for opera and non-opera theatre students, “It’s a Grand Night for Singing” also witnesses performances from individuals with no academic affiliation. It’s a community undertaking where a variety of people, from pre-med students and healthcare professionals to lawyers and high school students partake. This wide inclusion makes this event a cultural representation of the community and provides unforgettable experience to everyone involved.
Diverse Musical Treats
With songs ranging from Disney’s “Aladdin”, “Barbie” to a medley of the Eagles, the event boasts a wide variety of performances. The organisers realise the importance of inclusion of classic compositions as well. Therefore, songs from the legends like Rodgers & Hammerstein, Lerner & Loewe form part of the repertoire. They understand the need to cater to every kind of audience, hence the varied mix of songs ranging from the old classics to the current hits.
A Grand Show Indeed
Staying true to its name, “It’s a Grand Night for Singing”, the event has become grander than ever. Over 350 costumes, a tremendous cast, and a lot of moving parts make the event a sight to behold. It’s not just a show, it’s a wedding with no such thing as small arrangements. The event has been beautifully managed by the core team vested with the responsibility for more than two decades. The team focuses on creating themes that speak to each generation, making it universally appealing.
Performances
The event shall be performed on several dates in June at the Singletary Center for the Arts. The aim is not only to entertain the local crowd but also to continue the tradition of promoting the extensive career opportunities in the field of performing arts.
