UK Healthcare Launches Cooking Videos to Empower Patients Through Nutrition

Lexington, Kentucky – UK Healthcare has launched a series of cooking videos aimed at empowering patients to take control of their health through nutrition. The initiative focuses on providing healthy, easy-to-follow, and affordable recipes suitable for individuals with dietary restrictions and sensitivities.

According to Lauren Batey, the program coordinator for the Food As Health Alliance at UK, the videos target patients struggling with food insecurity and chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. “With nutrition advice, it can get really overwhelming, really quickly,” Batey explained, emphasizing the need for accessible resources.

The videos are produced in collaboration with Jason Parmer, who handles filming and videography. Batey serves primarily as the director and occasionally hosts the segments, inviting other dietitians from UK Healthcare and the wider Lexington area to participate. This collaborative effort aims to provide a broader array of insights and experiences.

Lindsay Turner, a heart and lung transplant dietitian at UK Healthcare, recognizes the importance of these videos in extending outreach to patients within the community. She serves content through the Get Well Network across various hospitals, including Good Samaritan and Kentucky Children’s Hospital. “One patient in particular told me that they never knew that food could taste so good without using salt,” Turner shared. She noted another individual expressed appreciation for affordable recipe options.

Future plans for this initiative include developing additional videos focused on children’s health and cancer nutrition. Additionally, the team is creating magnets to distribute to patients, featuring QR codes that link directly to the cooking videos and recipes. This approach aims to make it even easier for patients to access nutritious cooking information from home.

The initiative aligns with UK Healthcare’s commitment to improving patient health outcomes through education and practical resources. By demystifying cooking and focusing on nutrition, the program seeks to make healthy eating an achievable goal for vulnerable populations.

For anyone interested in exploring these resources, the cooking videos promise an engaging and informative experience that highlights both affordability and taste.
