Lexington, Kentucky, has garnered notable recognition as the top travel destination on a recent list compiled by Southern Living for 2024. The publication’s editors highlighted both Lexington and the Daniel Boone National Forest’s Red River Gorge, with Lexington securing the coveted No. 1 spot among must-visit getaways in the South.

In a November 23 article, editor Mary Shannon Hodes shared her enthusiasm following a wedding experience in Lexington, the self-proclaimed “Horse Capital of the World.” She expressed a strong desire to return after her initial visit, singling out the city’s charming downtown area filled with appealing restaurants and shops. “I saw plenty of cute restaurants and shops I’d want to visit on a trip back,” she stated.

Tourists are increasingly flocking to Lexington for its scenic horse farms, prominent distilleries, and vibrant local arts scene. With approximately 600 short-term rentals available, such as Airbnb and VRBO listings, the city has welcomed a surge in tourism. Data from Airbnb indicates that the platform generated an estimated $54 million in economic activity within the city, along with $25 million in tax revenue in 2023, underscoring the financial significance of this influx.

Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton expressed her delight over the city’s ranking, emphasizing ongoing efforts to enhance its appeal as a tourist destination. “Our community is very special, and we enjoy sharing our beautiful City,” she remarked in response to the accolade. The city has received similar praise in previous months, with other publications recognizing Lexington as one of the South’s “best on the rise” and a top place to live.

In addition to Lexington, the Red River Gorge in Eastern Kentucky was also highlighted in the roundup. Writer Tara Massouleh McCay recounted her memorable stay in one of the gorge’s cliff-edge treehouses, remarking on the area’s stunning natural features, including impressive rock formations and scenic river views. “If you’re an outdoor lover, this is one under-the-radar, underrated destination you’ll want to add to your must-visit list,” she suggested.

The increased interest in Red River Gorge has spurred growth in local businesses, including new attractions like a helicopter tour company and a bar and grill in Stanton.

Southern Living’s list of the top getaway spots for 2024 includes:

  • Lexington
  • Austin, Texas
  • Montgomery, Ala.
  • Duluth, Ga.
  • Cashiers, N.C.
  • Athens, Ga.
  • Waynesville, N.C.
  • Oklahoma City, Okla.
  • Red River Gorge

With this recent recognition, both Lexington and Red River Gorge are poised to attract even more visitors looking to explore the natural and urban charm Kentucky has to offer.
