Toyota Announces $922 Million Investment for New Advanced Paint Facility in Georgetown
Georgetown, KY – Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky (TMMK) has unveiled plans for a substantial $922 million investment to establish a new advanced paint facility at its Georgetown plant, marking the largest investment in the Commonwealth this year. The new facility is scheduled to open in 2027 and aims to enhance operational efficiencies, reduce environmental impact, and improve vehicle finish quality.
“Kentucky and Toyota have formed a winning partnership over the past 40 years that has been transformational for families throughout the Commonwealth, and this latest investment builds on that tradition of success,” said Governor Andy Beshear. He expressed gratitude to Toyota leadership for their ongoing commitment to Kentucky’s workforce.
The construction of the 1 million square-foot facility will result in a 30% decrease in carbon emissions and a reduction in water usage by approximately 1.5 million gallons per year. This project directly supports Toyota’s ambitious goal of achieving zero carbon emissions by 2050 and incorporates advanced paint technologies that provide a wider array of vibrant color options.
This announcement follows a $1.3 billion investment made earlier in the year to begin assembling an all-new, three-row battery electric SUV at the Georgetown site, set to enter the U.S. market in 2026. With this recent announcement, Toyota’s total investment in Kentucky since it began operations in 1986 exceeds $11 billion.
“Not only will our customers get the dynamic and stylish exterior finishes they love, but Toyota’s commitment to advanced paint technologies goes beyond aesthetics as a leader in environmentally responsible manufacturing,” stated Kerry Creech, president of Toyota Kentucky. He emphasized that the company is investing over $2 billion this year alone into the Georgetown plant to ensure long-term job security for its team members.
TMMK has a storied history as a pioneer in automotive manufacturing, being the first Toyota plant in North America to produce hybrid electric vehicles in 2006, and later taking on the assembly of fuel cell modules for hydrogen-powered trucks. The facility plays a pivotal role in Toyota’s global electrification strategy, which includes plans to offer electric or hybrid versions of every vehicle model by 2025.
Currently, TMMK is Toyota’s largest production facility globally, with around 10,000 employees. Since its opening, the plant has produced over 12 million vehicles, including the Camry, which is recognized as America’s best-selling sedan. The facility has an annual production capacity of approximately 550,000 vehicles and 600,000 engines, with support from more than 350 suppliers across the nation, over 100 of which are based in Kentucky.
Since 2020, Toyota has committed over $20 billion to enhance its U.S. manufacturing operations, significantly focusing on electrification. The company is further dedicated to investing in local communities, with more than $154 million in donations since establishing its presence in Kentucky, highlighting their ongoing focus on education and workforce development.
