The Boot Store in Nicholasville Celebrates 40 Years as Kentucky’s Western Wear Leader

Nicholasville is celebrating a milestone as The Boot Store marks its 40th anniversary. Founded in 1984 by Wayne Musick, the store has grown from humble beginnings into Kentucky’s largest provider of western wear.

Musick first ventured into the retail world in 1980 after purchasing inexpensive cowboy hats at an outdoor market. Initially selling from his car at stockyards, flea markets, and county fairs, his entrepreneurial spirit quickly transformed his roadside setup into a fully operational storefront.

In June 1984, Musick rented a 1,000-square-foot location at 3090 Lexington Road. Within a year, he expanded the store’s size and established the western-themed facade that is highly recognizable today. The Boot Store offers a wide range of products, including western boots, casual footwear, work boots, and custom-made options.

As the store grew, so did its community impact, employing local families and serving customers across the decades. Musick reflects on the rapid development of the area, noting that U.S. 27, once a two-lane road, now accommodates over 80,000 vehicles daily.

Despite facing significant challenges, including a fire in 2015 that temporarily closed the store and damage from an EF-1 tornado in April 2024, Musick’s resilience has remained strong. His philosophy is straightforward: hard work, financial prudence, and integrity are the keys to success. “You have two options when you fall into a hole,” he said. “You can either climb out, or call a decorator.”

Today, The Boot Store stands as a testament to Musick’s dedication and the loyalty of his customers. As Nicholasville continues to grow and evolve, Musick reassures patrons that the values of The Boot Store will endure. The store operates from Monday to Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and remains a cherished part of the local landscape.
