Lexington Residents Brace for Cold Weather and Potential Snow This Thanksgiving Weekend

Lexington residents should prepare for a mix of challenging weather conditions, including rain, potential snow, and significantly colder temperatures in the coming days. According to forecasts from the National Weather Service, Thanksgiving Day will experience a high near 44 degrees Fahrenheit and a low around 28 degrees, with a 40% to 50% chance of light rain, particularly peaking from Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

Evan Webb, a lead forecaster, noted that Thanksgiving will be characterized by chilly, overcast, and breezy conditions, as a weather system rolls through the region. Following the holiday, Black Friday is expected to cool down even further, with temperatures ranging from 20 to 37 degrees, which is 5 to 7 degrees below average.

This weekend will bring some of the coldest weather seen this season, with projected temperatures about 10 to 15 degrees colder than normal. Expected lows will hover around 20 degrees and highs in the 30s, continuing into early December.

Furthermore, there is a chance for light snow this weekend, particularly on Saturday, with a 30% chance of occurrence, although it’s premature to predict accumulation amounts. Lexington’s first snow of the season was recorded on November 21, where half an inch was noted. Historically, the city’s average first measurable snowfall occurs around November 29.

Temperatures on Sunday may not exceed 32 degrees, potentially impacting road conditions. Webb advised that residents should remain vigilant about weather forecasts and be prepared for winter driving conditions. Best practices suggested include driving slowly, allowing extra time for travel, checking tire conditions, and preparing an emergency supply kit containing essential items like blankets, food, and water.

As residents gear up for the holiday weekend, it is crucial to stay informed about evolving weather conditions and plan accordingly for safety on the roads.
