Lexington, Ky. – Recycling services in Lexington and surrounding communities will experience a temporary disruption from December 4 to December 15, as the Lexington Recycle Center will be closed for essential upgrades. The city has announced that the closure will allow for the replacement of the baler and a fabric structure integral to the recycling process.
Residents are encouraged to put out their last recycling materials by December 3, as the next opportunity to recycle at the center will not be available until it reopens on December 16. During the shutdown, while residents may continue to use recycling carts and dumpsters, the materials collected will not be recycled and will instead be sent to a landfill.
City officials advise that residents hold onto their recyclables if possible, particularly priority items such as aluminum and steel cans, as well as cardboard. Items such as glass, paper, and plastic are considered lower priority and can wait until the center resumes operations.
This closure will affect various communities that rely on the Lexington Recycle Center for their recycling services. The impacted areas include Anderson County, Berea, Boyle County, Clark County, Danville, Frankfort, Franklin County, Georgetown, Harrison County, Harrodsburg, Jessamine County, Lawrenceburg, Madison County, Montgomery County, Nicholasville, Scott County, Shelby County, Shelbyville, Simpsonville, Versailles, and Winchester.
City officials are reminding residents to adjust their recycling habits during this temporary pause and to be mindful of the priority items suggested for storage until the center reopens.
