LEXINGTON, Ky. – As temperatures plummet to the coldest nights of the season, a dedicated community effort is underway to support the city’s unhoused population. Brother Thomas Caudill, a key figure in this initiative, is committed to helping those in need, stating, “I’ll be out every day, so you see me, you yell.”
The city of Lexington offers approximately 90 motel rooms for individuals experiencing homelessness. However, there are around 400 people still on the waiting list. This disparity highlights the critical need for ongoing outreach and support. Brother Thomas leads the Catholic Action Center’s Compassionate Caravan, which is equipped with vital supplies for those who are unhoused.
Throughout the current cold snap, the Compassionate Caravan is distributing essential items such as handwarmers, socks, gloves, toboggans, jackets, and sleeping bags. The team has already served 600 individuals with food on Thanksgiving night and continues to distribute supplies nightly. Brother Thomas reports a positive response from those receiving assistance, with many recognizing him and expressing gratitude, saying, “Oh Brother Thomas!”
The mission of the Compassionate Caravan extends beyond providing physical items. Brother Thomas emphasizes the importance of listening and connecting with those he helps. He often shares a prayer with individuals in need, signifying the combination of spiritual and tangible support. “Lord come be with him, come listen to what he’s asking for right now,” he prays with one person on the street.
