Lexington, Ky. – September marks Suicide Prevention Month, a time when awareness and support are paramount for individuals struggling with mental health issues. Local resources, such as New Vista’s 24-hour helpline, are crucial for Kentucky residents seeking help. According to the organization’s 988 Coordinator, having open discussions about suicide is essential to help those suffering in silence.
In the past month, New Vista’s helpline has fielded over 700 calls, a number that continues to rise as awareness of the 988 emergency hotline expands. “Having a link to these resources at a time when you don’t know where else to go can be life-changing,” said the 988 Coordinator. New Vista emphasizes that a simple three-digit number can provide immediate access to crucial support.
Volunteers answering these crisis calls undergo more than 50 hours of specialized training to assist callers in need. “Many people don’t know how to seek help until it’s almost too late,” the Coordinator noted, underscoring the importance of having trained individuals ready to offer support when needed. For those experiencing a mental health crisis, assistance is just a phone call away at 988 or 1-800-928-8000.
Additionally, New Vista provides crisis walk-in services throughout the week. These services are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., allowing anyone in distress to connect with a therapist directly.
