Last night in Pittsburgh, the atmosphere was electric as the Steelers faced off against their long-time rivals, the Cleveland Browns. But things took a turn for the worse as the Steelers fell short with a final score of 24-19. Fans showed up with hopes and prayers, but that last-minute desperation play turned into a scene that had everyone talking.
The game ended on a dramatic Hail Mary attempt from quarterback Kenny Pickett, as he launched the ball towards the end zone in a last-ditch effort to keep the game alive. But when the ball was still flapping around in the air, all eyes were on George Pickens, the Steelers’ standout wide receiver. Cleveland’s cornerback, Greg Newsome II, had the tough job of keeping Pickens in check.
Despite the game clock hitting zero, it wasn’t all hugs and high-fives. Pickens and Newsome exchanged some heated words as they tussled through the back of the end zone. Things escalated, and not long after the final whistle blew, Pickens was seen grappling with Newsome, leading to a wild scene. Amazon Prime Video caught footage of Pickens being held back as other players milled around exchanging handshakes.
This isn’t the first rodeo for Pickens when it comes to being in hot water. Known for his fierce competitiveness, he has developed a reputation for questionable on-field antics. Let’s be real, the Steelers have put up with plenty from him, mostly because he’s their best receiver. But did he go too far last night? Coaches are probably cringing at the thought of reviewing the tape — especially with Pickens kicking up dirt at the end of such a tight game.
After the final whistle, Pickens wasn’t ready to give the Browns any credit for their win. In a post-game rant, he voiced his opinion that “the conditions played a huge, huge part in today’s game”, and flat out dismissed the Browns’ performance, stating that he doesn’t think they’re any good. This type of talk isn’t going to win him any fans in the rival locker room.
Greg Newsome had his say after the game too. He summed up his thoughts on Pickens with a cheeky tweet calling him a “fake tough guy”. It’s an exchange that’s bound to keep the chatter alive as everyone wonders what will happen next between these two.
Despite the tussle and the controversy, Pickens still had a solid game, catching four passes for 48 yards on seven targets. He’s clearly a valuable asset for the Steelers, but one has to wonder at what cost. Will Pickens be able to focus on his play moving forward, or will he continue to be a headline for all the wrong reasons?
As the Steelers look ahead to their next game, fans are left hoping for a team that can shake off this tough loss and come back stronger. George Pickens might be a star player, but he’s got to channel that fire into the game, not into pushing and shoving on the field.
Only time will tell how the team will bounce back and how Pickens will manage his competitive spirit. For now, Pittsburgh is feeling the sting of a loss and hoping for better days ahead.
