Remembering Smiley Pete: Lexington’s Beloved Canine Conman on His 81st Anniversary
It’s a sunny day in Lexington, and the bustling streets seem a little livelier as residents take a moment to remember a legendary figure from the city’s past – the incredible Smiley Pete, affectionately dubbed the “Conman Canine.” Born in 1943, Smiley Pete wasn’t just any dog; he was a local hero whose escapades captured hearts and made him a beloved character on the streets of downtown Lexington.
A Life of Adventure
Smiley Pete’s remarkable story began with his curious spirit and a natural inclination to wander. His owner’s attempts to keep him at home fell flat early on, and it wasn’t long before this adventurous pup made the sidewalks of downtown his permanent home. Between the bustling intersections of Main and Limestone streets, Pete charted a life full of excitement, charm, and successful begging for food from kind-hearted local business owners.
For an astonishing 13 years, this clever canine perfected his daily routine in a way that would make any food lover envious. His mornings kicked off with a hearty breakfast at Brandy’s Kitchen, where he indulged in delicious hamburgers and waffles. Then it was off to the University of Kentucky’s campus for lunch, graciously served by the multitude of students who knew him well.
Cheers to the Best!
As the day carried on, it became a bit of a ritual for Pete to sip on a refreshing beer at Elliston’s Turf Bar. By dinner time, he would head over to Carter’s Supply Co. for a more conventional meal, consisting of real dog food and a generous serving of water. But what really amazed everyone was Pete’s sweet tooth! He couldn’t resist the delectable Hershey bar he received at Paritz’s Short & Lime Liquor Store, which became a staple of his culinary delights.
A Tense Time for Our Favorite Pooch
Additionally, Pete experienced an allergic reaction to chocolate, which was diagnosed around the same time. This only intensified the love locals held for him, as newspaper articles began to urge residents to refrain from giving him his precious Hershey bars. Sadly, despite the efforts to keep him safe, Pete suffered his tragic departure during the quarantine when he had a heart attack in 1957.
A Lasting Legacy
In a loving tribute, a commemorative marker now stands proudly at the corner of Limestone and Main Street, inviting all to come and remember the beloved Smiley Pete. Locals often stop by, raise a glass in his memory, and even leave a Hershey bar as a sweet nod to their four-legged friend.
So, gather your friends and family, and take a moment to celebrate the joyous spirit of Smiley Pete, the pup who roamed the streets of Lexington with a huge heart and an even bigger appetite for life. Cheers to the “Conman Canine!”
