As Fall Arrives, Kentucky Residents Face Increased Allergy Symptoms Due to Pollen and Mold

LEXINGTON, Ky.—As autumn arrives, residents across the commonwealth are embracing seasonal festivities, but they are also facing the challenges of increased allergy symptoms. According to Dr. William Greisner from Bluegrass Allergy Care, individuals allergic to weed pollen and mold may experience heightened discomfort while enjoying outdoor activities.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 1 in 4 adults suffer from seasonal allergies. While spring allergies are often more visible due to blooming plants, fall also brings its own risks. “In the fall, the weeds just aren’t as noticeable, so people forget that they are pollinating too,” Dr. Greisner explained. The peak for this weed pollen season is typically from late summer until the first frost.

Additionally, the changing foliage may contribute to allergies. Dr. Greisner noted, “The big problem with leaves falling is once they get wet.” Currently, dry conditions result in low mold levels, but rain can trigger significant mold growth, exacerbating allergy symptoms.

Typical allergy symptoms include congestion, runny nose, throat drainage, and itchy, watery eyes. To mitigate these effects, Dr. Greisner advises residents to take precautions. “The best thing to do is be prepared. Take that oral antihistamine before you go on that hayride or before you play in the leaves,” he said. He also recommends using a nasal steroid spray consistently throughout the season.

As the weather transitions and more people engage in outdoor activities, awareness and preparation can help alleviate the impact of seasonal allergies. With proactive measures, residents can enjoy the beauty of fall while minimizing the risk of allergy symptoms.
