LEXINGTON, Ky. — Bands gathered Saturday afternoon to prepare for Rock Relief, a musical event aimed at helping domestic violence victims. Created by Ned Bellau, the event is designed to give back to the community through the power of music.
Bellau expressed his commitment to supporting others, stating, “Everybody needs help at some point in their life. So if there is a way to give back, this is my way.” The event partners with Greenhouse 17, a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting survivors of domestic violence in regaining control of their lives.
Misti Dawn, a survivor and advocate, emphasized the importance of support for those escaping abusive situations. She shared her story, reflecting on the dark place she found herself in during a domestic violence relationship. Dawn remarked, “You have to have hope.” She expressed gratitude for her escape, recognizing the vital role of support systems like Greenhouse 17.
Dawn aims to be a voice for those who feel unable to speak out, highlighting the often isolated circumstances faced by many victims. She noted, “A lot of women who are in domestic violence, they’re very sheltered in their life. They don’t have any friends, they don’t have relatives, and they have no place to go.” The situation can become dire, she said, making the need for organizations that facilitate safe exits critical.
The bands performing at Rock Relief are focusing on raising awareness about domestic violence resources. Their hope is that by showcasing these community support systems, they inspire others to assist individuals in crisis. As the event progresses, both performers and organizers expect it to foster a sense of community and provide a platform for discussing important issues surrounding domestic violence.
In conclusion, Rock Relief not only offers a night of music but also serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing need for awareness and support for those affected by domestic violence. It is events like these that shine a light on critical resources, ensuring that more individuals can find the help they need.
