LEXINGTON, Ky. – Rain showers have moved into the area this morning, bringing with them scattered thunderstorms that are expected to persist through early afternoon. While severe weather is not anticipated, residents should prepare for brief periods of heavier rain and potential thunder. By this evening, the rain is expected to shift eastward as a cold front passes through the region overnight.
Temperatures today will begin relatively mild, ranging from the mid-40s in northern areas to the upper 50s in the southeast. However, as the rain subsides, temperatures are forecasted to decrease, leading to a chillier afternoon compared to the mid-to-late morning warmth. Rainfall amounts are predicted to reach between one to two inches, particularly affecting areas between I-64 and the southern Kentucky parkways, where localized flooding may occur due to already saturated soils.
As colder air moves in behind the front, temperatures will plummet into the low 30s tonight. Thursday is expected to feel notably chilly, with highs struggling to reach the upper 30s to low 40s under mostly cloudy skies.
Looking ahead to late this week and into the weekend, another weather system is forecasted for Friday. This system may bring a mix of rain and snow in the morning, transitioning to primarily snow as temperatures drop throughout the day. Light accumulations of snow are possible, especially in the mountainous regions of southeastern Kentucky. Snow showers and flurries could linger into Saturday, particularly in the higher elevations, creating slippery road conditions on bridges and overpasses.
Sunday will be dry but cold, with daytime highs in the 30s and nighttime lows dipping into the teens and low 20s. The start of the upcoming week will see continued cold conditions on Monday morning, but temperatures are expected to begin moderating by the afternoon. Rain is projected to return by late Christmas Eve and into Christmas Day. Unfortunately, this warmer system means the chances for a white Christmas remain unlikely, with Christmas Day temperatures predicted to be slightly above average, ranging from the upper 40s to low 50s.
Residents are encouraged to stay updated with the latest forecasts as conditions may change. The ABC 36 Storm Team will continue to provide timely updates.
