Lexington is in mourning following the tragic death of community leader and activist Quaynell King, who was shot and killed on Versailles Road Sunday night. At 44 years old, King was known for his deep commitment to community advocacy, serving as a voice for the Smithtown neighborhood.

King’s death marks the second homicide in Lexington within just two days. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and Bluegrass Crime Stoppers is encouraging anyone with information to provide tips by calling (859) 253-2020.

Friends and colleagues remember King as a passionate advocate who dedicated his life to uplifting those around him. Trevor Claiborn, who grew up with King in Lexington, described him as a “bight, intentional, entrepreneurial person” who exemplified respect and trustworthiness. He recalled instances where King would go to great lengths to help his neighbors, even giving away his own shoes.

Leandra Forman, executive director of the nonprofit FoodChain, highlighted King’s tireless efforts for social justice and community development. She emphasized his dedication to tangible outcomes, stating, “He didn’t just talk about getting things done. If he wanted something done, he was the one there making it happen.” Recently, King played a crucial role in launching the East End Shared Kitchen, a space that aims to support local food businesses.

His commitment extended to organizing community meals, including a Thanksgiving event for individuals experiencing homelessness just last week. King’s work was characterized by a continuous desire to serve others and address community needs head-on.

Survived by a son and daughter, King leaves behind a legacy that friends hope will continue through his children. Claiborn remarked, “I hope the community is able to continue his legacy for his children, to see how important their father was.”

A vigil to honor King’s life and contributions is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday at Coolivan Park. Community members are invited to gather and reflect on the impact King had on Lexington.
