Lexington, Ky. — Hundreds of new college graduates have joined the nursing workforce within the UK HealthCare system, marking a significant step in addressing a critical nursing shortage in Kentucky. This surge in hiring follows a dedicated recruitment initiative launched by the University of Kentucky’s health care system, which invited students and job-seekers nationwide to a recent career fair.
During the career fair, prospective nurses had the chance to meet with hiring managers and observe healthcare staff in action. As a result, approximately 328 graduates from 40 different colleges have been transitioned into various UK HealthCare facilities, helping to fill essential nursing positions. Frederick Martin, UK’s Associate Vice President of Human Resources, highlighted that the ongoing nursing shortage has been exacerbated by the pandemic, retirements, and a drop in new entrants to the field.
Martin emphasized the urgent need for nursing staff at UK HealthCare, stating, “Our nursing population is one of the key areas that we need to grow.” Looking forward, the health system is committed to enhancing retention rates among nurses and fostering connections between them and the local community. Plans are also in place to establish a pipeline that encourages even younger students to consider careers in healthcare.
As Kentucky faces a perfect storm of demand for healthcare services, particularly nursing, UK HealthCare aims to ensure that residents have access to quality care now and in the future, especially as the health system prepares for upcoming expansions.
