LEXINGTON, Ky. — As we step into September, which is recognized as National Recovery Month, many support organizations across Lexington are coming together to provide assistance for individuals dealing with Substance Use Disorder. One of the key players in this movement is Shepherd’s House, a nonprofit that offers recovery housing specifically designed to help men find their footing on the road to recovery.
One heartwarming story comes from Seth Ayers, a recent graduate of the long-term recovery program at Shepherd’s House. “When you get to that point, and you’re ready to ask for help, you need somebody there to answer that call,” Ayers shared, emphasizing the significant role that programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Shepherd’s House play in the recovery process.
At Shepherd’s House, recovery housing is a structured environment where individuals can grow alongside peers who share similar challenges. According to Ayers, the aim of the program is to help its residents accomplish basic life skills like securing a job, paying bills, maintaining a daily routine, processing emotions, and even living with others in a communal space. “We teach them not just to handle conflict, but to handle it in a healthier way than before,” he explained.
However, the journey towards recovery is anything but smooth. Sean Schomp, the Director of Operations at Shepherd’s House and a recovery veteran himself, acknowledges the challenges that lie ahead. As he prepares to celebrate his seventh anniversary of staying sober, he stresses the importance of having a supportive environment. “There are going to be hard days. By having a circle of support around you, it helps keep you on your journey,” he said.
Schomp’s dedication to supporting individuals in recovery reflects a larger ethos at Shepherd’s House. Many staff members have walked the same path and understand the struggles that these men face. Their experience allows them to provide guidance and encouragement, nurturing a sense of belonging and hope.
“Focusing on the strength and hope that recovery provides is a huge step in the right direction,” advises Ayers. He emphasizes that breaking down the stigma that surrounds addiction is crucial to fostering an open atmosphere where individuals can seek help without fear of judgment.
Shepherd’s House operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, offering both men’s and women’s programs aimed at helping individuals reintegrate into everyday life in a healthy manner. Their structured programs not only focus on remedying substance abuse but also encourage life skills that are essential after leaving their care.
Throughout National Recovery Month, various initiatives and awareness campaigns will take place in Lexington. Community members are encouraged to get involved and show their support for those who are on the recovery journey. Whether volunteering time, donating resources, or simply spreading the word about local recovery programs, everyone can play a part in making a difference.
As the month progresses, Shepherd’s House and similar organizations are committed to guiding individuals toward better lives and away from addiction. Their success stories remind us that change is possible and that recovery can lead to a fulfilling and meaningful life. “I wake up every day grateful for this second chance,” added Ayers, summarizing the impact that Shepherd’s House has had on his journey.
In conclusion, the brave souls at Shepherd’s House are not just proving that recovery is possible but are setting an example for countless others. Through their unwavering support and comprehensive programs, they are effectively reshaping lives and inspiring hope in the community.
As September unfolds, let’s remember that recovery is not just a personal journey but a communal one. Together, we can shed the stigma, celebrate success, and nurture the hope that brings healing to those in need.
