The decoration, a symbol of joy for the community, has prompted a search effort since its disappearance on March 16, 2025. Neighbors are expressing their hope for Snoopy’s return while displaying signs and sharing memories of the decoration’s significance. The investigation remains open as community members rally together in hopes of restoring the cheerful landmark.
South Ashland – A beloved lawn decoration resembling Snoopy has mysteriously gone missing from its usual spot in South Ashland, leaving local residents in shock and prompting a community-wide search effort. The decoration disappeared on the morning of March 16, 2025, after being a fixture in the neighborhood for nine months, perched alongside Woodstock atop a portable toilet on Lexington Road.
The portable toilet, strategically placed in front of 244 South Ashland Ave., was originally installed by architect Reese Reinhold and his wife, Becky, during the late summer of the previous year. The unique idea came from neighbor Solly Van Meter, who sought to add character to the porta-potty, dubbing it an homage to Snoopy’s iconic doghouse. Van Meter highlighted that the character was there to fend off the fanciful threat posed by the infamous Bloody Red Baron, the fictional adversary from the popular Peanuts cartoon series.
Community members reacted positively to Snoopy’s presence, often stopping to take pictures and selfies with the cheerful decoration, which became a well-known landmark in South Ashland. However, the joy turned to dismay when Snoopy and Woodstock were discovered missing, leaving behind only the bungee cords that had secured them in place. The theft was notably discovered by Becky Reinhold while she returned from a morning run with Van Meter.
In the wake of the disappearance, Van Meter took the initiative to create a wooden sign that read “Snoopy Come Home,” symbolizing the community’s collective hope for Snoopy’s safe return. The phrase resonated with residents, expressing their desire to see the decoration return and restore the smiles it once provided. Unfortunately, despite the sign being displayed, there have been no reports or sightings regarding the missing Snoopy since it was posted.
Reese Reinhold expressed hope that someone might return the beloved decoration, though the family is already considering the option of acquiring a new decoration for the portable toilet area. Nevertheless, any replacement is expected to remain as long as the porta-potty stays in place, which annually attracts local interest.
Adding to the background, the Reinhold family has a long-standing tradition of displaying a lighted Snoopy on their roof during the Christmas season. This custom has been upheld for two decades and was a surprise for Becky Reinhold when her husband and daughter installed it without her prior knowledge. The decision to display Snoopy atop the portable toilet originated from this festive tradition, aiming to spread cheer and smiles in the neighborhood.
As the search continues, residents of South Ashland remain hopeful. The disappearance of Snoopy not only represents the loss of a whimsical decoration but also serves as a reminder of the connections and smiles that simple acts can bring to a community.
The investigation into the missing decoration remains open, and local authorities have encouraged residents to stay vigilant and report any sightings or information related to Snoopy’s disappearance.
