Richmond, Kentucky – A vacant lot off Main Street has transformed into a thriving community space, known as Millstone Park, thanks to local resident Speedy Denny and his vision. The park, which officially opened in September 2019, features 45 millstones that serve as both the centerpiece and inspiration for the town’s annual fall festival.
The initiative began in 2018 when Denny, who grew up in the landscaping business, pitched his idea to the city manager. He offered to donate his collection of millstones and install them at no cost to the city. With the manager’s approval and no formal contract, Denny embarked on a mission to gather more stones, reaching out to community members and homeowners.
Over the years, Denny succeeded in locating additional millstones, though some came at a price. “I had to pay them some pretty good money,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of the project to him. The stones were not only valuable but also heavy, requiring the use of landscaping equipment and custom designed concrete platforms built by masons to securely display each piece.
Millstone Park has blossomed into a key feature of the community, aligning with Richmond’s desire for a unique identity. Erin Moore from the Parks and Recreation department noted, “After this park was created, we said, ‘let’s start a festival and base it on the millstones.'” The upcoming 4th annual Millstone Festival will celebrate this community gem, drawing visitors to enjoy the vibrant showcase.
Denny’s contributions extended beyond just the stones. He planted approximately 90% of the landscaping within Millstone Park, initially funding much of the work himself. The area has since evolved from a mere concrete alley into a vibrant public space for residents and visitors alike. The city now manages ongoing maintenance, ensuring the park remains lush and inviting.
