State Review Identifies Educational Challenges at Bryan Station Middle School
Students at Lexington’s Bryan Station Middle School are reportedly not being subjected to high academic expectations, a recent state diagnostic review by a team of educators found. The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) worked with the local stakeholders and the school board members to devise a plan to improve the school’s academic standards.
Comprehensive Support and Improvement Plan
The school, identified by the KDE for comprehensive support and improvement, now has to implement a carefully crafted turnaround plan under the guidance of the education department. “Schools that are earmarked for support and improvement, as per this review, must work in conjunction with local stakeholders for creating and implementing an effective turnaround strategy,” remarked KDE spokesperson.
Performance Lower than Statewide Standards
The review, published on the KDE’s website, revealed a disturbing performance pattern. The proportion of Bryan Station Middle School students excelling in different fields such as reading, math, science, and social studies was found to be lower than the Kentucky summative assessment statewide standards of 2022-23.
Even the performance of the students learning the English language did not show a positive trend, thus necessitating comprehensive support. The review underscored that academic rigour in coursework was seldom seen, and engaging activities promoting active learning were rarely assigned. Furthermore, it revealed that the school staff was often in the dark about the implementation of several academic initiatives due to inadequate communication.
Building a Positive Learning Environment
Bill Bradford, Chief School Leadership Officer for Middle Schools in Fayette County, recognized the positive strides made by the school in student conduct over the last academic year. “Optimal conditions for teaching and learning, and positive adult-student interactions were observed,” he affirmed.
Potential for Improvement
Bradford acknowledged the need for improvement as outlined in the review report and expressed confidence. “The faculty, administration, and district support personnel are ready to revise systems and implement data-driven procedures to enhance student performance and bridge academic gaps among different student populations,” he stated confidently.
Despite the challenges identified for Bryan Station Middle School, the principal was recognized for their ability to lead a comprehensive turnaround. The KDE stated that Bryan Station Middle School is the only school needing comprehensive support in Fayette County and is amongst 28 such schools in the state.
