Lexington, Kentucky: A center for local commerce and community, the Local LEX Market, distinctly celebrated the completion of its tremendous three years on Saturday, March 23, 2024. The occasion brought together small business owners, crafters, vendors, and the local community to commemorate and appreciate this milestone.
Established in the heart of Lexington, the Local LEX Market proved to be a ray of hope for small businesses, especially those impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. For three persistent years, the market has been an instrumental platform for over 70 vendors, providing them ample space to showcase their unique, handcrafted items, thus fostering local commerce and community engagement.
Liesa Sumner, the proud owner of Honey Bee Candles and Soaps, has been associated with the market from its inception. She praised the market for its generous space, allowing vendors like her to showcase an extensive range of products. Sumner claimed, “I couldn’t ask for anything better,” illustrating the market’s significant impact on her business.
Chelsea Wilson, who runs Chelsea’s Crunch, joined the market this February. She expressed her delight at the enlarged customer base made possible by the immense footfall at the market. She lauded the market, describing it as “amazing with so many small business owners,” highlighting its role as a vital gathering place for the local community.
The third-year anniversary celebration of the market was a lively event, drawing vendors and visitors alike. Sumner, Wilson, and a host of other vendors were present at the event, interacting with customers and sharing their offerings.
Jennifer Smyth, owner of the Modern Zen Candle Company and a participant at the market since its establishment, praised the event for its role in presenting the diverse offerings of the market to the community.
The foundations of the Local LEX Market were laid by Merritt Monroy and her husband during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Monroys envisaged the market as a beacon of support for small businesses in the local community. Three years into the endeavor, Monroy takes pride in witnessing her vendors grow into robust, successful businesses.
Reflecting on the journey, Monroy stated, “It’s so heartwarming to watch my vendors underneath of us grow and turn into big, successful companies.” The success stories of these businesses are testaments to the market’s integral role in the community.
The Local LEX Market is all geared up to host monthly block parties on the first Sunday of every month from April to October. The market also plans to host a grand Derby-themed party on April 17, promising more opportunities for community engagement and support for local businesses.
