Local Family Launches Christmas Card Campaign to Lift Spirits of Man Battling Leukemia

SOMERSET, Ky. – A local family is hoping to bring holiday cheer to Richard Abbott, who is battling leukemia. The Somerset resident has been given less than a year to live, prompting his family to initiate a special Christmas campaign.

Richard Abbott, a former local business owner, has faced significant health challenges over the past couple of years. Crystal Abbott, Richard’s wife, recalls the challenging moment two years ago when doctors informed them that a miracle would be needed for him to reach his current milestone. “They told him if he makes it a year it would be a miracle,” Crystal said. Since then, they have cherished the extra time they’ve spent together, although she notes that “there is no more they can do.”

As Christmas approaches, the Abbott family has rallied around Richard’s situation, particularly their 11 grandchildren who suggested an idea to spread joy. Autumn, one of the grandchildren, emphasized the importance of this Christmas. “This Christmas is going to mean a lot because of everything going on,” she stated. The family’s initiative aims to collect as many Christmas cards as possible, ideally breaking a world record in the process.

The goal is ambitious. To set a new world record, the Abbott family would need to receive *350 million* Christmas cards, a feat that Crystal is determined to push for. “I researched that to break the world record we would have to receive 350 million cards! But if we do, I will find a place for them!” she explained.

Those interested in supporting the family can send their cards to Richard Abbott at 431 Poplar Estates Road, Somerset, Kentucky 42503. Richard, who has been known for his generosity throughout his life, would appreciate each card as a gesture of goodwill and kindness in return for the support he has shown to the community throughout the years. “If you see a man struggling, you’re supposed to help him out of the ditch,” he remarked, reflecting on his past actions.

As family members prepare to celebrate the holiday season, they remain hopeful that friends, neighbors, and kind-hearted strangers will contribute to this heartwarming campaign. The encouragement and love shown through the Christmas cards may significantly uplift Richard’s spirits during this challenging time, reinforcing the power of community support.
