Lexington is experiencing a winter wonderland with nearly a foot of snow accumulated this past week due to Winter Storm Blair. Residents must navigate chilly temperatures, with few above-freezing days expected. Community responses include emergency declarations and precautions to ensure safety during the harsh weather. With more snow in the forecast and roads being maintained for public safety, the city remains focused on assisting those in need. Despite the winter challenges, residents are encouraged to stay warm and safe as they embrace the season together.

Lexington Weather Update: Winter Wonderland Continues

Oh, Lexington! It seems like winter has truly settled in, bringing its snowy charm and chilly embrace. Over the past week, residents have woken up to approximately a foot of snow blanketing the city. That’s right—one whole foot! It’s hard to deny how beautiful it looks when the snowflakes fall, but the reality of winter storm conditions is something we all have to deal with.

The Storm’s Impact

The recent winter weather can be attributed to a lovely visit from Winter Storm Blair, which dumped a hefty 7 inches of snow on January 5. And if that wasn’t enough, an additional 3 inches followed on Friday and early Saturday. Talk about a winter wonderland! But with all this snow, the National Weather Service’s meteorologist, Evan Webb, confirms that we might not be out of the woods just yet. It looks like we have at least another week to 10 days of snowy weather in store!

Say Hello to Sunshine… But Not Quite Warmth

If you’re looking for a glimmer of hope, you might be pleased to hear that we have some mostly sunny days lined up this week. But don’t get too excited—only two of those days are expected to break the freezing mark! The high temperature might have reached a brief 35 degrees Fahrenheit on Monday, but it quickly dropped back down. In fact, we won’t see any above-freezing temperatures until Thursday, January 16.

Cold Nights and More Snow?

With single-digit lows expected, there’s potential for even more snow, keeping winter lovers happy and winter haters longing for spring. When temperatures finally begin to rise, factors such as intense solar radiation, high humidity, and warm ground temperatures will play a role in snow melting. However, forecasts suggest that Friday, January 17, could bring highs creeping into the 40s along with rain—this might finally do the trick to help melt away some of that snow.

Emergency Declarations and Community Responses

The snowy conditions have led to an extended emergency declaration, set to last at least until Monday, January 13. City officials have made it clear that preparations are in full swing. Salt barns are fully stocked, and crews are primed and ready to tackle any challenges posed by the winter weather.

Residents are kindly asked to avoid parking on designated snow emergency routes. This is crucial as it helps keep streets clear for snowplows and emergency vehicles. All public safety divisions are operating on 24-hour schedules, and Streets and Roads crews are hard at work with 12-hour shifts to keep our roads safe for travel.

Community Safety Precautions

In light of these winter conditions, it’s essential to stay informed about traffic and safety measures. The number of non-injury collisions has seen an uptick due to the snowfall, so it’s wise to stay safe and limit non-essential travel. Fayette County Public Schools have already canceled all extracurricular activities through the weekend, and Lexington Waste Management is focusing solely on trash collection for the week, pausing recycling and yard waste pickups where necessary.

Moreover, the Emergency Winter Weather Plan is active until January 17, providing additional shelter support for those in need. Lextran is even offering free rides to individuals experiencing homelessness, ensuring everyone has a safe spot to escape the cold.

Staying Warm and Safe

As temperatures drop to dangerous lows, residents are reminded to practice fire safety, especially when using alternative heating sources. And in a gesture of understanding, city officials will not enforce parking citations related to snow emergency violations. Those affected can simply contact LexPark for assistance.

Though the winter storm has brought about some challenges, Lexington’s community spirit continues to shine brightly. So, bundle up, stay safe, and let’s embrace this winter together!
