Lexington Set to Host Week-Long Initiative Encouraging Residents to Go Car-Free

Lexington Paves the Way for a Week Without Driving

Lexington is gearing up for an exciting initiative called Week Without Driving, which is set to take place from September 30 to October 6. This event is aimed at encouraging citizens to step away from their personal vehicles for a week to better understand the everyday challenges that those without access to a car face. It’s a topic that hits close to home for many residents, and the hope is to spark conversations about transportation in our community.

According to data from the Federal Highway Administration, around one-third of residents in Kentucky do not hold a driver’s license. The reasons for this vary; some may be too young or too old, while others may be living with disabilities or have recently moved to the area and haven’t yet had a chance to obtain a license. Additionally, it’s worth noting that there are folks who have licenses but can’t afford to own a car or simply prefer not to drive if they have options—like biking, walking, or riding the bus.

While Lexington has made strides in enhancing our infrastructure and embracing the Complete Streets policy, there are still areas in the city that are tough to navigate without having a vehicle. The goal of Week Without Driving is not about competition or ranks; instead, it’s a worthwhile chance for everyone—elected officials, community leaders, and everyday drivers—to immerse themselves in the non-driver experience. This helps highlight barriers to transportation within our city and allows us to come together for constructive discussions on how we can improve.

During this week, if you find yourself needing to drive, it may be beneficial to ask, “What would someone without a car do in this situation?” Such reflections could lead to doable ideas—maybe running errands on your cargo e-bike or hopping on the bus to grab a book from the library. Even better, it opens the door to thinking more broadly about systemic changes: What if public transportation was more frequent? Or how about constructing safer paths for those walking or biking?

This initiative is especially crucial for those in our community who depend on accessible and reliable transportation for their day-to-day activities—be it commuting to work, visiting a doctor, picking up groceries, or participating in social events. Making improvements in our transportation systems doesn’t just create a smoother flow of traffic; it also fosters a healthier community by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing overall mental and physical well-being.

During the Week Without Driving, the voices of non-drivers will be amplified, urging everyone to think about their choices and the potential alternatives. It’s about empathy—understanding that being without a car comes with unique struggles. Maybe you’ve never considered how an eight-minute drive could quickly transform into a lengthy bus ride or a ten-minute walk, depending on where you live and your access to public transport.

As this week approaches, here are a few suggestions on how to participate: try biking for daily commutes, walking to local shops, or brainstorming carpooling options with friends and family. Social gatherings may even become opportunities to bundle trips, allowing participants to creatively connect without driving separately. Seasoned bikers and walkers might even discover new routes or hidden gems in the city during their travels.

The Week Without Driving is an open invitation to learn, experience, and ultimately shape a future where transportation is accessible to all. It’s a great chance to experiment with different commuting options and to consider how we can create a more extensive network that promotes alternative modes of transit. The more active involvement from the community, the clearer our vision will become for a well-connected Lexington.

If you’re interested in learning more or eagerly want to sign up, you can do so at linktr.ee/WeekWithoutDrivingLex. This will not only get you involved but also connect you with others who are making a conscious effort to rethink their transportation habits.

As Lexington takes these important steps, we have a fantastic opportunity on our hands—one that can lead to a safer, healthier, and more vibrant community for everyone, regardless of how they choose to get around. Let’s support one another, have fun exploring different ways to navigate our city, and make significant strides in shaping an inclusive transportation system for all.
