Town Hall on Lexington Urban Service Boundary Expansion Slated for Monday

Lexington, Kentucky – The Urban Service Boundary (USB) expansion of the city is the highlight of a town hall meeting scheduled for Monday. The public gathering will be held at Lexington’s Senior Center on Life Lane, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. It is hoped that proactive community members who have a vested interest in the planned 2,800-acre expansion of the city’s USB will come forward to offer their thoughts and suggestions.

First USB Expansion Since 1996

According to Jim Duncan, the city’s planning director, this is a significant move as it marks the first USB expansion since 1996. The city is actively seeking ideas and feedback from the residents to ensure the planned extension is in alignment with the community needs. In a recently released statement, Duncan stressed that this event isn’t simply for show and that public input is critical to the project’s success.

“We absolutely believe that we can get good ideas from our citizens, from people who are familiar with the areas, [and are] familiar with the needs. They can study a plan, we can talk to them about it, and we’ll absolutely heed what they contribute, with the possibility of their ideas being incorporated into the final plan,” Duncan said.

Quality of Life – Top Priority

Among the topics anticipated to generate widespread interest at the town hall would be the discussion around quality of life elements such as trails, green spaces, and parks. Duncan assured that the city’s consultant team and staff will be on hand to engage and interact with residents, providing a visual representation of the proposed five areas for growth and the concepts of future development.

Next Steps

The Planning Commission members will receive the proposed concepts at their Thursday work session scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. in City Hall. Looking ahead, the Division of Planning is expected to present the final growth plan by October. This plan will contain adaptations and amendments based on the feedback and suggestions from the community collected at the town hall.
