The lovely city of Lexington is abuzz with excitement as the Lexington Theatre Company, affectionately known as The Lex, gears up to celebrate a fabulous milestone—its 10th anniversary! This joyous occasion will be marked by the much-anticipated event, “Concert with the Stars,” scheduled for January 11 at the enchanting Lexington Opera House.
For a decade, The Lex has been on a mission to bring Broadway-level talent right to the heart of the Bluegrass region. Founded by the talented duo of Lyndy Franklin-Smith and Jeromy Smith, the company has blossomed into an educational haven for students and aspiring performers. This year’s concert promises to be particularly special, showcasing the incredible journeys of stage actors from Lexington who have shone brightly on Broadway and other national stages.
A highlight of the concert will be the participation of Haley Fish, a Broadway sensation known for her outstanding roles in “Cats” and “Gypsy.” She will return to her roots for this spectacular event, which holds deep emotional significance for her. Similarly, Darian Sanders, who dazzled audiences as a local talent in the inaugural concert, is now touring with the beloved production of “The Lion King.” His return underscores the importance of bringing established Broadway stars back home to inspire the local community.
The Lex has a proud history of nurturing local talent. Over the years, it has featured rising stars like Laura Bell Bundy and Colton Ryan, who both started their artistic journeys in Lexington before blossoming into Broadway sensations. Artistic Director Lyndy Franklin-Smith brings her own Broadway experience to the table, having graced the stage in productions such as “A Chorus Line” and “The Little Mermaid.” Her passion and dedication have been instrumental in the company’s success.
This year’s concert will not only feature some of the best voices from Broadway but will also include rising stars from the local theater scene. Hayley Podschun, renowned for her captivating portrayal of Maria in the recent 2023 production of “The Sound of Music,” will grace the stage alongside talented student performers from that same production.
As the concert revisits highlights from its first decade, you can expect an evening filled with nostalgia—celebrating not just the performances but also the growth of the company itself. What started as a single annual concert and a summer production has now expanded into a fully-fledged theater company. The Lex now operates from its own facility, producing two summer shows, a holiday production, and so much more!
Over the years, The Lex has established a reputation as a nurturing ground for aspiring actors and performers. Many students who have graced its stages have gone on to make their mark in the world of professional theater and beyond. The pride felt by both former and current performers is palpable, as they acknowledge the invaluable opportunities their local theater company has afforded them.
Mark your calendars for January 11, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. The concert will be held at the Lexington Opera House located at 401 W. Short St. Don’t miss out on this incredible celebration of talent, passion, and community spirit! Tickets are available through Ticketmaster or by calling 859-233-3535. Celebrate this milestone with The Lex and experience the magic of Broadway right in your own backyard!
