The City of Lexington has announced updated guidelines for trash collection and storm waste disposal, making it easier for residents to manage storm debris. Curbside waste collection is available, and Fayette County residents can drop off yard waste at the Haley Pike Waste Management Facility. Additionally, there will be adjustments in collection days, and double shifts are being implemented to address the garbage backlog from recent winter storms, while recycling collection is temporarily paused.
Hey there, Lexington residents! If you’ve been wondering what to do with all that storm debris left over from last week’s winter weather, you’re in luck. The City of Lexington has just rolled out new guidelines for storm waste disposal and trash collection services, making it easier for you to tackle that clutter.
First up, if you’re one of those lucky folks with curbside waste collection, you can simply toss your fallen trees and yard waste right at the curb. That’s right! Just leave it there for pickup. But wait, there’s even more good news. If you are located in Fayette County, you can take not one, but two pickup truck loads of yard waste each month to the Haley Pike Waste Management Facility without paying a dime. Seriously, what could be better?
If you’re not familiar with it, the Haley Pike Waste Management Facility is situated at 4216 Hedger Lane. They’re operating from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. So you have plenty of time to drop off your yard debris as long as you hit those hours!
Now, let’s talk trash – specifically, your trash collection. If your trash cart was missed last week, don’t fret! Just leave it at the curb until it gets picked up. Here’s the silver lining: this week, Waste Management has decided not to enforce the usual rule requiring carts to be brought off the curb. So let your trash cart hang out a little longer!
If by Wednesday your cart hasn’t been collected yet, make sure to report that missed pickup by calling 311 or heading over to lexingtonky.gov/lexcall to fill out a quick online form. Waste Management is hopeful they’ll catch up with all missed streets pretty soon, so hang in there.
Want to keep a finger on the pulse of waste collection changes? It’s super easy! You can sign up for text alerts by simply texting the day of your waste collection (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday) to 888777. Or if you prefer emails, check out lexingtonky.gov/311alerts to sign up.
Speaking of collection changes, the garbage collection schedule is being flipped around a bit. If you missed collection on Monday, it will now happen on Thursday, while Tuesday’s trash will be picked up on Friday. Regular pickups on Thursday will remain unchanged, which is a relief!
Just a quick reminder, it’s best practice to place your carts out the evening before your scheduled pickup. That way you avoid any last-minute scrambles before the crew comes around!
Here’s something to cheer about: waste management crews will be pulling in double shifts this week to collect the garbage backlog from the winter storm. They’re gearing up to take care of two days’ worth of trash in one go, so that should help clear out the streets faster.
One important note: there will be no recycling or yard waste collection this week. Businesses with dumpsters usually serviced on Monday or Tuesday can expect their pickups on Thursday or Friday, but they should ensure that dumpster areas are cleared of snow and locks aren’t frozen to avoid any hiccups in service.
So, there you have it, folks! With these updates in trash collection and storm waste disposal guidelines, Lexington is on the right track to getting back to normal. Let’s keep our community clean and support our waste management teams as they work hard to catch up. Happy cleaning!
