LEXINGTON, Ky. — The city is exploring the potential for solar energy integration, as announced by Mayor Linda Gorton on Thursday. An internal research group has been tasked with assessing how solar power can be utilized effectively throughout Lexington.
A key initiative on the agenda is the proposed installation of a solar farm on the Haley Pike Landfill, a site that spans over 600 acres. Mayor Gorton described the project as “promising,” emphasizing the environmental benefits. “If we find that solar will work on our landfill, it would be a great step forward for sustainable energy in Lexington without the loss of prime farmland,” she stated.
The proposed use of the landfill for solar energy production will require approval from state agencies. An official press release indicated that utilizing the landfill site is a preferable alternative compared to converting agricultural land into solar farms—a plan currently being examined by the Kentucky Public Service Commission.
In addition to the landfill project, Lexington aims to achieve SolSmart accreditation. This program promotes solar energy adoption and provides recognitions for cities contributing significantly to sustainable energy efforts. Mayor Gorton highlighted the importance of such initiatives for economic competitiveness, stating, “Sustainable energy options are important to the health of our residents, and increasingly more important to attracting businesses and growing our economy.”
Currently, two solar programs are already underway in Lexington, underscoring the city’s commitment to enhancing its renewable energy infrastructure.
This exploration into solar energy use in Lexington aligns with a growing trend among cities across the United States, as local governments seek to lead in sustainable practices while preserving valuable farmland.
