Suspect Arrested in Connection with Lexington Teen’s Fatal Shooting

LEXINGTON, Ky. — A suspect has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of a local teenager, marking a significant development in the ongoing investigation. Jon’tay Mattingly, 19, was taken into custody on Thursday, following the fatal shooting of Kenlon Johnson, 17, which occurred on March 8, 2024.

Johnson was shot outside a residence on Rockaway Place. He was transported to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. Authorities are treating Johnson’s death as a homicide.

Detectives were able to identify Mattingly as a suspect utilizing the city’s Real-Time Intelligence Center, which includes advanced surveillance technologies like the Fusus platform and Flock Safety license plate readers. These tools have been instrumental in gathering evidence and tracking suspects in recent criminal investigations.

Mattingly faces charges of murder in connection with Johnson’s shooting, in addition to unrelated warrants. He is currently held at the Fayette County Detention Center, where his bail status has yet to be determined.

This incident has raised concerns within the Lexington community about youth violence and the safety of public spaces. As the investigation continues, local authorities are urging anyone with additional information related to the case to come forward.

The Lexington Police Department has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing gun violence and ensuring justice for victims and their families. Community members are advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.

As the situation develops, further updates will be provided to the public.
