Lexington to Install Inspiring 24-Foot Sculpture at Detention Center

Lexington, Kentucky is set to become home to a striking new artwork, a 24-foot sculpture titled ‘Birth of Hope’, designed by local artist Dave Caudill. The installation, commissioned by the Public Arts Commission, is scheduled for completion and display outside the Lexington Detention Center by December.

The sculpture aims to bring a sense of positivity and inspiration to individuals incarcerated within the facility. On Wednesday morning, the installation process began, facilitated by Jeffersonville’s MKS Global, which helped lift thousands of pounds of steel to construct Caudill’s design. Bill Moon, CEO of MKS Global, noted the challenges involved, stating, “It’s a little bit scary because we have to make sure everybody’s safe when putting up a structure this large.” He added that seeing all the work come to fruition is deeply satisfying.

‘Birth of Hope’ symbolizes human growth and the inherent value of those within the detention system. The sculpture features a steel nest from which an abstract and colorful piece will rise, reflecting themes of hope and renewal. According to Caudill, the artwork is not just a statement for those incarcerated but aims to inspire people from various backgrounds. He expressed his aspiration for the art, saying, “I hope it will just be an inspiration to them from time to time.”

Caudill emphasized the importance of artists contributing to their communities, stating, “It feels really good. You know, it’s one way that an artist can give back to the community to do something that’s going to last for a long time and convey the kind of message that you want.”

Once the installation is complete, the artwork will be deconstructed and transported to its final location at the detention center. The project represents both a creative and a community effort aimed at fostering hope and encouragement among those who encounter it.
