Road Closures Start Monday in Lexington Due to Major Construction
Lexington, KY – Commuters should brace themselves for significant road closures and lane restrictions starting Monday as a result of major construction projects in the city. The roads affected include Southbend Drive and parts of Leestown Road.
Southbend Drive Closure
Starting Monday, Southbend Drive will be closed from Clays Mill Road to Lafayette Parkway. The closure has been necessitated by the installation of a new sanitary sewer line at a creek crossing. Remarkably, this closure will last throughout summer, with the road expected to be open again by the first day of school on August 14th.
Lane Closures on Leestown Road
Parts of Leestown Road also face lane closures. Beginning from 7 p.m. on Monday night, Leestown Road will be limited to one lane in each direction. Additionally, the exit ramp from the eastbound New Circle Road to Leestown Road will also be squeezed to one lane.
The closures stem from the construction of a double crossover diamond bridge, a project tied to the New Circle Road widening project. This project is projected to wrap up by 2027.
Plan for Alternate Routes
Given the anticipated inconveniences, drivers are encouraged to plan for alternate routes and allow for extra travel time due to these construction activities. The disruptions will affect the regular flow of traffic, and significant delays are expected.
Impact on the Local Community
The closures and restrictions however should not be all doom and gloom. The construction projects, once completed, are expected to bring about significant improvements to the city’s infrastructure, enhance road safety, and streamline traffic. Meanwhile, the summer period is considered the most suitable for such activities due to less traffic caused by school holidays.
Stay Informed
Residents are urged to stay informed about these roadworks to avoid inconveniences and to plan their travel times effectively. The city officials will provide timely updates on the progress of the construction and any changes to the expected completion dates. They appreciate the public’s understanding and patience during this time.
