Lexington Residents Stay Informed: Health Department Releases New Watch List of Restaurants
In the heart of Lexington, excitement around dining out often goes hand-in-hand with concerns about food safety. Recently, the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department updated its watch list, including 148 local restaurants and food service establishments as of January 27. This list aims to keep the community informed while ensuring safe dining experiences.
Temporary Closures Signal Health Violations
Since last October, two restaurants faced the harsh reality of temporary closures due to health violations. Notably, on January 22, the Speedway located at 2301 Versailles Rd. found itself in hot water (or lack thereof) for operating without running water! Fortunately, the establishment hurriedly reopened just the next day. Meanwhile, in December, Nic & Norman’s at 135 W. Main St. experienced a brief closure on December 9 after grappling with a lack of hot water and issues with an inoperable dishwasher and three-compartment sink. Thankfully, they were back in business by December 10 after making some quick plumbing repairs.
A Look Back at Recent Trends
Interesting trends emerge when we take a glance back at the health department’s enforcement list. Notably, November 2024 saw no establishments getting closed, a reassuring sign for diners. In fact, the numbers tell a promising story. The number of restaurants on the watch list has actually decreased over the past year. It started with 158 establishments listed in January, 166 in June, and noted a drop to 160 in October.
From October 1 to January 27, while 26 new establishments made their way onto the watch list, at least 36 have successfully stepped off it after demonstrating improved practices during inspections. Some restaurants exited the list due to changes in ownership or complete closure. Lucky for food lovers, well-known names like Applebee’s, Dunkin Donuts, Texas Roadhouse, and Waffle House have made their exit from the watch list, indicating a renewed assurance for diners looking for tasty meals.
Inspection Protocols Explained
So, how does this watch list work? Well, restaurants are added when they score below 85 or encounter significant inspection point failures, often due to serious health hazards. For restaurants existing on the watch list, they get extra attention from health inspectors, making visits more frequent than the usual six-month interval.
In light of this dedicated monitoring program, the health department updated its enhanced enforcement initiative back in August 2020, designed to maintain a watchful eye over establishments that previously fell short of safety standards.
The Numbers Behind the Inspections
With almost 1,500 food service establishments in total, the health department conducts inspections at least twice a year for each. Although they have to limit the number of inspection reports available online due to staffing constraints, the latest inspection scores can often be found posted at each establishment for public viewing, keeping transparency at the forefront.
In light of all these measures, the overarching goal remains clear: the health department strives to enhance public safety and hygiene practices within Lexington’s diverse food service scene.
Keep Dining Smart!
As you make your plans for dining out in Lexington, remember to stay informed! Knowing which establishments are on the watch list can help you choose where to enjoy your next meal safely. With the health department actively working to monitor and improve food establishments, rest assured that your safety always comes first in the Lexington dining experience!
