Lexington Recycle Center to Close for 10 Days for Essential Repairs, Impacting Local Recycling Services

Lexington – The Lexington Recycle Center is set to close for 10 days for essential repairs, impacting recycling services for Lexington and 21 surrounding local governments. The facility will halt operations from December 4 through December 15, 2023, to replace two crucial pieces of equipment: a baler and a covering for the tipping floor.

The baler compresses raw recyclables into manageable blocks, while the covering keeps materials dry prior to processing. This closure will affect various communities including Anderson County, Boyle County, Frankfort, and Winchester, among others, all of which send their recyclables to the center.

During the closure, recyclables placed in designated bins will be sent to a landfill, as outlined by city officials. However, residents have alternatives if they cannot store their recyclables until the center reopens. Rumpke, a private trash disposal company, is offering two free recycling drop-off locations for Lexington Recycle Center customers. These drop-off services will ensure recyclables are sent to Rumpke’s processing center in Cincinnati.

Adam Rumpke, regional vice president for Rumpke, stated, “We made a commitment to our customers that we would collect and recycle paper, cans, bottles, cardboard, and glass, and we are taking extra steps to ensure recycling continues without interruption.”

The drop-off locations will be open during the closure. Residents are advised to place materials in the recycling containers loose, and to refrain from using plastic or other bags for their recyclables. For inquiries regarding recyclable materials, customers can reach Rumpke at 1-800-828-8171.

As the Lexington Recycle Center prepares for its temporary closure, residents are encouraged to utilize these alternative recycling options to minimize waste and continue their recycling efforts.
