Lexington Authorities Warn Residents of Increased Porch Piracy as Holiday Shopping Season Begins

Lexington, KY — As the holiday shopping season kicks off, local authorities are alerting residents about an increase in “porch piracy” incidents, where thieves steal packages left on doorsteps.

This warning comes in the wake of heightened online shopping, particularly during events like Cyber Monday. Lexington Police, led by Sgt. Guy Miller from the Public Information Office, are urging the public to be vigilant. “It’s a crime opportunity; someone sees that package and they seize it,” he stated.

To combat this rising threat, the Lexington Police Department has offered several strategies for residents to protect their deliveries. Key recommendations include:

  • Signing for Deliveries: Requesting signature confirmation for packages ensures that a resident is present upon delivery.
  • Neighbor Collaboration: Communicating with neighbors can provide additional security; collect packages promptly after delivery.
  • Delivery Instructions: Leaving specific drop-off instructions may help delivery personnel find safe locations away from potential thieves.
  • Installing Surveillance: Utilizing doorbell cameras can deter theft and document suspicious activity.

The police also advise homeowners to register their security measures with ConnectLex.org, a platform designed to assist authorities in tracking reported incidents.

If a package is stolen, Sgt. Miller encourages residents to report any suspicious behavior or information. “Many times, people think we have the information, and we don’t. Even the smallest detail can help detectives solve the case,” he emphasized.

Sharing security footage or other evidence can significantly aid local law enforcement. Additionally, anonymous tips can be submitted to Bluegrass Crime Stoppers for those who may wish to report without revealing their identity.

As the community navigates the busy shopping season, these proactive measures and communal support will be critical in reducing the risk of package theft.
