Lexington to Launch Yearlong 250th Anniversary Celebration with Free New Year’s Eve Event

Lexington will kick off its yearlong celebration with a community-wide, free New Year’s Eve event at Central Bank Center and Rupp Arena on December 31, 2023. This initiative is sponsored by Maker’s Mark and aims to set the tone for the city’s 250th anniversary.

Mayor Linda Gorton announced the festivities during a press conference: “We are just 40 days away from New Year’s Eve. This year, we will ring in the new year, Lexington style.” She emphasized the significance of starting the celebrations in the heart of downtown as part of the city’s milestone.

The evening’s events will begin at approximately 5 p.m. with indoor activities designed for children, including inflatables and basketball at Rupp Arena. The Lexington Children’s Museum will also offer special programming, ensuring fun for families.

As the night progresses, festivities will transition to an outdoor setting around 9 p.m. on the Vine Street side of Central Bank Center, featuring free live music performances by regional artists such as Tee Dee Young and Honeychild. In addition to the musical lineup, attendees can enjoy a variety of food trucks and vendors.

“You don’t have to sit at home and watch the ball drop. You can come downtown,” said Gorton. The event aims to bring together the community for a night of celebration, laying the groundwork for a year filled with commemorative activities and historical reflection.

The Lex 250th Commission, made up of community members, has meticulously planned events throughout 2025, with each month showcasing a unique theme. Themes include wellness in January, history in February, and arts in November, culminating in a focus on the future of Lexington in December.

To support these endeavors, the city has allocated $250,000 for the celebrations, with corporate sponsors including VisitLex, CHI Saint Joseph, and the University of Kentucky. Future events will delve into various aspects of Lexington’s identity and heritage, engaging residents over the coming year.
