Lexington police have arrested a man in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred last week on Russell Cave Road. Steven McGaughy, 30, is facing multiple charges including murder, first degree wanton endangerment, and first-degree criminal mischief following the incident on September 27 that resulted in the death of Jaquan Grundy, a 25-year-old from Louisville.
The shooting took place in the early hours, around 2 a.m., on the 1400 block of Russell Cave Road. Officers responded to reports of gunfire and discovered Grundy suffering from a gunshot wound. He was promptly transported to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
Investigators were able to identify McGaughy as the suspect through advanced technology, utilizing the city’s FLOCK license plate readers, the Real-Time Intelligence Center, and FUSUS camera software. This technology played a crucial role in tracking down McGaughy, who is currently held at the Fayette County Detention Center.
This tragic incident marks the 12th homicide in Lexington for the year 2024, highlighting ongoing concerns regarding gun violence in the community.
As authorities continue their investigation, they encourage anyone with additional information to come forward. Community safety remains a top priority as the city grapples with the implications of rising crime rates.
