Lexington Launches First Black-Owned Cosmetology School, Ray-Con Academy

Lexington Welcomes New Black-Owned Cosmetology School

Lexington, Ky. — The city is set to embrace an important milestone in beauty education with the launch of Ray-Con Academy, the first black-owned cosmetology school in the area. On Monday night, around 20 potential students gathered for an enrollment event that marked a significant moment for the community.

Connie Mosley Goree, the owner of Ray-Con Academy, expressed her excitement as she welcomed attendees. “It started out as just a dream,” she stated, sharing her motivation behind opening the school. The academy, named after her parents Raymond and Connie, is now officially accepting students.

For Mosley Goree, the venture is not just about education; it is about sharing her passion. “I’ve been doing hair for so long, and I wanted to bless other people with the gift God gave me,” she said. “Bringing this to light has been a joy, a long time coming.”

The enrollment event featured an enticing offer: half-off tuition for one night only. “Cosmetology school typically costs between $18,000 and $20,000 and takes about eight months to complete,” Mosley Goree explained. This reduced rate was described by future student Chante Waide as “huge, priceless.” Waide expressed gratitude for the opportunity, stating that Connie’s generosity has enabled her to pursue her calling in the beauty industry.

The establishment of Ray-Con Academy not only fulfills the educational aspirations of its owner but also resonates with a broader community goal: increasing diversity and accessibility in the beauty sector. As future students embark on this journey, they join a movement for greater representation within the industry.

As Ray-Con Academy prepares to open its doors, many are hopeful for the positive impact it will have on aspiring cosmetologists in Lexington and beyond.
